Gemmano, in the heart of the Valconca valley, boasts a rich heritage in culture and landscape rich in beauty, ideal for those looking for a place to walk or cycle in tranquillity. The caves of Onferno, the valley of Ventena, the gullies, paths passing alongside rural hamlets, views that are an absolute must for those wanting the get to know a more isolated part of the hills, where time seems just to stand still A real treasure for those who love uncontaminated nature, and total peace and quiet.
The territory is surrounded by the Grotte di Onferno, the only natural caves of the valley Valconca, a place of ancient legends, such as the one telling that Dante took inspiration from the caves to write his Divine Comedy. The caves are a unique heritage of the Rimini area, of national importance. The underground passages originate from a stream which over thousands of years has dug away at the mass of gypsum on which the “Castrum Inferi” stood. The caves can be visited all year round, and represent a highly atmospheric and interesting location both in terms of nature and speleology.
In 1992 this area became the Riserva naturale orientata: 123 hectares of special flora and fauna, host also to an interesting museo naturale, open also in the Winter. The new exhibition uses multimedia and interactive systems to highlight the special features of this area, from a historical and environmental point of view, creating the ideal space for visitors to learn of local nature. A strong focus was given to the information on the bats that populate the caves, clearing up any doubts and doing away with superstitions, and making way for a new collective awareness of these miracles of evolution.
