Rimini
Rimini - Castel Sismondo
Built not only as a military fortress but also as a residence for the Lord in the city, the castle was inhabited from 1446, while the bastions of the outer walls originate from a later date, following the death of Sigismondo. At present, the castle has now lost its original form, represented on the commemorative medal of Matteo de' Pasti, and the fresco painting by Piero della Francesca in the Tempio Malatestiano.
Verucchio
Verucchio - Malatesta fortress
This Fortress, known as "sasso" (the rock) is the most solid and visible in the area, despite conversions and restorations, and together with those of Montebello, San Leo and Santarcangelo, is one of the most beautiful and fascinating castles of the entire Valmarecchia valley.
Montefiore Conca
Montefiore Conca - Malatesta fortress
This Rock dominates the middle valley of the Conca and that of Ventina, and is part of the most solid and integrated chain of the Malatesta defence system. It is perhaps the most characteristic of the Malatesta castles due to its round design and the height of the rock face, with a peculiar, virtually surreal appearance, smooth and faceted, compacted and crystalline. It therefore comes as no surprise that it caught the eye of Giovanni Bellini, who used it in the background of at least two of his paintings.
Santarcangelo
Santarcangelo - Malatesta fortress
The historical references to the fortress (one of the medieval castles of the Rimini province) date back to the end of the 9th century, recalling Federico Barbarossa, the battles between the Guelphs and Ghibellines, the tragedy of Paolo and Francesca and the long rule of the Malatesta (1248/1471). It was indeed a member of the Malatesta family, Sigismondo Pandolfo (academic, warrior and architect) who rebuilt the castle as a fortress, the work being completed in 1447, to give the overall structure the layout of today.
Montebello
Montebello - Fortress of Guidi di Bagno
This is a castle of feudal origins, with the Fortress built on the ruins of a Roman "castrum" in the 11th century, standing on the edge of a sharp cliff face in a strategic position over the valley of Marecchia. A construction in such compact solid stones that when observed, still today, so high up in the sky, seems to keep vigil over the borders of three Regions and two States.
Mondaino
Mondaino - Malatesta fortress
The fortress of Mondaino, its surrounding walls and the Northern gate, founded on a large sloping base, all show the signs of the various updates attributable to Sigismondo Malatesta, forming a very picturesque collection, also thanks to the insertion of an eye-catching eighteenth century semi-circular piazza with porticoes.

Gradara
Gradara - Malatesta castle
The Fortress of Gradara represents a magnificent example of military architecture of the 12th-13th century, nobly standing on the hills just a few kilometres from the sea. Started 900 years ago by the Degriffo family, it was then enlarged and enhanced over the centuries by the various landowners of Gradara: the Malatesta, Sforza, and Della Rovere families.
San Leo
San Leo - Renaissance Fortress
The Fortress dates back to the Roman era, and now stands with its renaissance layout thanks to the Siena architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini, assigned by Federico da Montefeltro with the task of adapting the fortress to new weapons. Now, many visitors are also attracted by the prison and the death of Cagliostro.
Montegridolfo
Montegridolfo - Castle
An ancient castle, which, over the centuries, experienced the difficult clashes between the Malatesta family and Montefeltro family, due to its unique and strategic position. The narrow passage of the tower of the gate, similar to a drawbridge, gives access to a medieval hamlet, restored to its original splendour and rightly quoted as one of the most beautiful hamlets in Italy.
Repubblica di San Marino
Republic of San Marino
The independence of the Republic dates far back, so much so that San Marino is deemed the most ancient republic in the world. Tradition dates its foundation back to 3 September 301 AD, when Saint Marino, a Dalmatian stone mason of the island of Arbe, fled from the persecution of the Christians by the Roman emperor Diocletian , and set up a small Christian community on Mount Titano , the highest of the seven mounts of the Republic. The owner of the area, a rich lady from Rimini, donated the territory of Mount Titano to the small community, which named it in memory of the founder “Land of San Marino”. The small capital hosts a historical, local and architectural heritage of inestimable value.
