Legend has it that the name Gemmano derived from Gemma in hand. It is said that an Etruscan soldier was killed by the Romans while wearing a ring for his fiancée. So the origins of the name may derive from theRoman era. On the slopes of the hill are remains of the Romanesque civilisation that have not yet been brought to light.

From the ancient Romans to the Malatesta
Since ancient times, the place was identified as 'fondo geminum'. Subsequently, the municipality belonged to the Malatesta and thus to the Papal State until the unification of Italy. On the three hills that dominate the municipal territory were built the castles of Onferno, Marazzano, Gemmanoof which the partially restored ruins still exist today.
Legend has it that Dante Alighieri, while fleeing from Florence, took refuge in the karstic caves of Onferno, where he found inspiration for the canticle.

Travelling through unspoilt landscapes
Gemmano, in heart of the Conca Valley, boasts a rich landscape and cultural heritage, excellent for walking by bicycle or on foot. La Ventena Valley, i ravinespaths between the rural hamletsare just some of the treasures for lovers of unspoilt nature and tranquillity.
The territory is surrounded by the mysterious Caves of Onfernothe only natural ones in the Conca Valley.

Entering a unique and evocative world
Caves are a unique heritage in the Rimini area, which is of national importance and can be visited all year round. Not only that: in 2023 also UNESCO World Heritage Site precisely because of their uniqueness and relevance. All the more reason to discover and visit them.
Le Onferno Caves and the Oriented Nature Reserve consist of 123 hectares of special flora and faunawhich houses an interesting nature museum, also open in winter. Strong emphasis is placed on the knowledge of bats that inhabit the caves, erasing superstitions.

If you wish to devote yourself to other sporting activities in the company of your family or friends, a short distance from Gemmano there is a riding centre and a brand new golf courseopen all year round to beginners and professionals.
The Onferno Oriented Nature Reserve is one of the most fascinating places in thehinterland of Romagna. The evocative suburb rises on the chalk between the hills. Apparently, the name derives from the ancient belief that the natural tunnels led straight to hell. What to visit inside the reserve? The Natural History Museum, the new Multimedia Museum and the Cà Gessi Environmental Education Centre, ideal for children.

Open all year round, the centre organises riding courses (also for children from 4 years of age) for beginners and competitive show jumping. In summer, the centre is open all day, and in winter only in the afternoon from 14:00 to 19:00. Hippotherapy courses in agreement with the Municipality of Riccione.

Just 3 km from the sea is an entirely new facility surrounded by greenery, complete with a wellness centre, gym, massage area and relaxation zone.
In the hinterland between Riccione and San Giovanni in Marignano, golf enthusiasts will find an 18-hole course on the right bank of the Conca river
